COLLABORATIONS

At International Medical Group our mission is to make a difference to the standards of healthcare in Uganda.

In order to achieve our mission and vision, we need to develop our skills base in this medical setting.

Developing certain specialised skills within Uganda can sometimes pose a challenge since we lack the expertise in certain fields in the form of expertise and appropriate technology. Modern medical technology is extremely expensive as is the cost of hiring high level specialist expertise.

We have therefore decided to be proactive by opening up this page to encourage collaboration with institutions abroad and the forming of associations to bridge this gap through exchange programmes, volunteer programmes and a grants programme.

EXCHANGE PROGRAMME

The exchange programme is probably most appropriate for medical staff i.e. nurses, medical doctors, laboratory technicians, pharmacy staff, radiographers and biomedical technicians.

Through the exchange programme, staff that get exposure abroad in their relevant field, can come back and impart what they have learned. This will help develop the skills of their colleagues.

Medical personnel from partner institutions who come on the exchange programme will similarly have the opportunity to broaden their experience in field such as AIDS and tropical medicine to which they would otherwise have little exposure.

Logistics for this programme would have to be agreed between both parties.

VOLUNTEER PROGRAMME

The volunteer programme welcomes people who are skilled in various medical and administrative disciplines to work within our organisation. This can be on a long term or short term basis. IMG will provide accommodation and transport to and from the place of work for the volunteers and may provide a small living allowance, depending on the length of stay and specialty in which the volunteer is working.

In terms of sending our own people abroad or having volunteers come here, we are open to both avenues of developing our skills base, but on balance we prefer experts to come here, since they are then passing on their knowledge in the appropriate setting. It is a fact that personnel from developing countries may receive training in a first world country, which they are not able to put into practice in their own country since the conditions on the ground are different.

GRANTS PROGRAMME

Collaboration in terms of funding is obviously vital to both programmes. These funds will help in facilitating whatever is needed to bridge the skills gap, not only in the organisation, but also Uganda as a nation.

At the moment, we have set up an Educational Fund where contributions offered are welcome. These funds may also be channelled either direct to an NGO (not for profit organisation) – International Medical Foundation, which we have set up in Uganda, or through a UK based mission organisation – Church Mission Society Ireland. Funds sent to CMSI should be clearly designated for International Hospital Educational Fund.
